Uploading Your Web
Site (WS_FTP Tutorial)
If you don't already have a copy of WS_FTP your can download it from our FTP server:
Windows3.1: ftp://ftp.sol.co.uk/pub/pc/internet/ftp/ws_ftp.exe
Windows95: ftp://ftp.sol.co.uk/pub/Windows95/Internet/FTP/ws_ftp32.exe
| 2. Setting Up &
Using WS_FTP |
WS_FTP provides ease of use for the beginner plus a full set of
functions for the power user.
The left half of the main window is the local information. The right
half of the main window is the remote information. In each half of the main window there
are two list boxes. The upper box is a list of directories while the lower half is a list
of files. Just to the right of the two list boxes are a column of buttons. See example
below.

1) Session Setup
First set up your sessions options as in example below:

Enter www.portables1.ngfl.gov.uk in the
Host Name/Address box.
Enter your username into the User ID
box.
Your password into the Password
box.
Give the settings a Profile Name ( i.e. Becta in
this example).
Check the Save Password box.
Now click on the Startup Tab.

Put the first part of your e-mail address (the bit before
the "@") in the Initial Remote Host Directory box, eg. if your
e-mail address is chrisplank@portables1.ngfl.gov.uk,
insert chrisplank (see the screen shot above for an example).
2) Logon to Remote Host
Your profile information is now entered. In future sessions you can
connect to the web server by simply clicking on the connect button, choosing the host from
the name list ( i.e. Becta) and then clicking on the OK button.

Once connected the server will place you in your own home directory.
This is shown in the example above, where in the Remote System Window (on
the left) the working directory is /chrisplank/
3) Uploading Files
Your first file in any directory must be called index.htm
To upload click on the file or files in you local directory then click
on the -->
The system with then begin uploading your files.

You can upload multiple files at once by selecting all the files you
wish to upload before clicking on the upload button. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key on
your keyboard whilst clicking (with your mouse) on the files you wish to transfer, then
click on the --> to upload your files.
If you wish to upload a directory, such as the images directory in the
above example, simply highlight the directory by clicking on it with your mouse once, and
then click on the --> to upload your files. WS FTP will ask you if you wish to transfer
the selected directory structures, answer yes if you do, no otherwise. If you do, WS FTP
will replicate the directory tree and files contained in that tree on the remote server.
| 3. Viewing Your Site
& Further Assistance |
If everything has been loaded correctly you should be able
bring up your homepages in your browser and see them on line.
The URL for your site will be http://www.portables1.ngfl.gov.uk/dirname/
(i.e. Where dirname is the first part of your e-mail address (the bit before the
"@") eg. if your e-mail address is chrisplank@portables1.ngfl.gov.uk,
your URL would be http://www.portables1.ngfl.gov.uk/chrisplank/).
