Golden Week
The week of the 23rd June '03 saw St Stephen's School celebrating 50 years of multicultural education. During the week many activities took place including, a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum; the chance for children to learn dances through the decades; 'museum' displays concerning each decade that were designed and constructed by each class of pupils; an open afternoon that allowed parents to view the 'museum' displays; the creation of a fifty year time capsule and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the opening of the new buildings.

The week culminated with Golden Evening on the Friday of Golden Week. Golden Evening provided an opportunity for the present staff to invite back members of staff who had worked at St Stephen's over the past fifty years and who had played a part in the school's success. Friends of St Stephen's and local dignitaries were also invited. Mr Stephen Timms MP, joined the Chair of Governors in delivering speeches which highlighted the school's sustained success and which paid tribute to the excellent work of the present Head Teacher, Jane Johnson. Mr Dempsey, the Chair of Governors, pointed out to invited guests that during the 50 years since St Stephen's has been serving its community, in all that time St Stephen's has only had 4 Head Teachers. He also highlighted that during Mrs Johnson's Headship alone, 5 of the school's deputy head teachers had gone on to take headships in other Newham schools. As usual Mrs Johnson was typically modest about her own tremendous contribution in making the school continuously sucessful over the last twenty years. All in all the evening proved to be a most memorable occasion.

The Thursday of Golden Week saw the St Stephen's hold its Sports Day, the first for three years that wasn't postponed due to poor weather. Every pupil in the school participated and parents attended in large numbers to support the event and to cheer on their children. One pupil in Year 2 deserves a special mention. Sophia in Neena's class was entered in the Year 3 and 4 long distance race for boys and girls. Sophia came second! Look out Paula Radcliffe! A whole range of track and field events were arranged, including the highly competitive parents' race! The PTA would like to thank the teachers of the school for making the day such a success and to particularly thank David Pasola (The PE Co-ordinator) for co-ordinating the event so well.

Playing for Success

During the summer term, ten pupils from Year 5 have been lucky enough to take part in an after school scheme based at West Ham's football ground.  The scheme is aimed at supporting children's literacy and numeracy work through activities related to football. The pupils have completed activities like measuring the football pitch, producing a football A to Z and using ICT to design advertising leaflets. The children have had the experience of working with others from different schools in an exciting environment. All pupils involved have learned a range of new skills and enjoyed the course immensely. St Stephen's hope to be a part of the scheme again next year.
