Uploading Your Web
Site Using MacOS (Fetch Tutorial)
When you start Fetch, you will be presented with
a dialog box like the one below:
- Enter your username in the User ID box.
- Enter your password in the Password box.
- Put the first part of your e-mail address (the bit before the
"@") in the Directory box, eg. if your e-mail address is chrisplank@portables1.ngfl.gov.uk,
insert chrisplank (see the screen shot above for an example).
- Click OK.
Once connected, the server will place you in your own home
directory. This is shown in the example below:
To upload files, click on the Put File
button, a dialogue box like the one below will appear:
NB. The first file of your website should be titled index.htm
Select the file in the usual manner from your machine and click Open.
The following box will appear:
Click on the Format box and change to Raw Data
if the file to be transfered is a picture, or to Text if the file is an html
document (as shown below).
NOTE: Your file names should not contain any spaces or meta
characters such as
" ! £ $ % ^ & * ( ) + = @ ' ; : / ? > < , # | \
` ¬ )
Once transfered, the file name will appear in the listing of files on
the server as shown below:

To take a file from the server and put it onto your machine, select it
on the server listing and either drag it onto your destop, or click on the Get
File (recommended way) to transfer it onto your machine. The following diaglogue
box will appear, allowing you to save the file where you want.

If everything has been loaded correctly you should be able
bring up your homepages in your browser and see them on line.
The URL for your site will be http://www.portables1.ngfl.gov.uk/dirname/
(i.e. Where dirname is the first part of your e-mail address (the bit before the
"@") eg. if your e-mail address is chrisplank@portables1.ngfl.gov.uk,
your URL would be http://www.portables1.ngfl.gov.uk/chrisplank/).
If you cannot get logged in, or have any other uploading
related problems, please fill in the fault
report form and we will investigate the problem and get back to you.

not provide HTML support. If you need HTML support please look at the various sites on the
Net, such as http://www.hwg.org/resources/.
