  • Pastoral, Social and Welfare Needs of Pupils

Parents are welcome to discuss with the class teacher or the Head Teacher any worries they may have about the welfare of their child. Each family is asked to fill in a contact form giving information to the school to help in the case of emergencies. In the case of an accident or other emergency, first aid is administered and parents contacted.

    Child Protection

Our school recognises the important role that the whole community plays in promoting the health, safety and well being of all children. In view of our spedal relationships with children and their families, staff need to be particularly alert to any signs of possible abuse or neglect and have a legal duty to pass on any concerns to the designated teacher for Child Protection. These concerns must be reported to the Social Services Department or the Police Service. The school does not have any role to play in the investigation of child protection issues but must co-operate with other agencies in any investigation or monitoring as necessary. The school is also required to follow procedures set out by the Area Child Protection Committee for child protection which all staff follow and to have clear internal procedures and guidance for staff. It is expected that schools will develop effective working relationships with all agencies concerned with the welfare of children.
In common with other Calderdale schools Governors have now adopted a Child Protection Policy and Procedures which are available to any parent who wishes to see them.
If any parent has a concern about the welfare of any child in the school s/he should speak to the Designated Teacher (Mrs K Pogson) or contact the Social Services Department.

    School Dress

Although school dress is optional, sweatshirts and tee shirts, printed with the school logo are available through the Parents and Friends Association. All clothes worn in school should be clearly named.
Soft soled shoes are necessary in nursery and a change of footwear is encouraged throughout the school in winter months. PE shorts are provided, but each child requires a tee-shirt and a pair of named pumps in a named bag.

    Meals in School

A school lunch is served in the hall or parents can provide a packed lunch from home. Applications for free school meals can be made to the Education Welfare Office in Pitt Street, adjacent to the school.

    School Attendance

The Education (Pupil Attendance Records) Regulations 1991 require schools to publish information about rates of absence for children from Year1.

Rates of Authorised and Unauthorised Absence 1997-98 (in the period up to 22 - May 1998)

    1. The total number of registered pupils=81%
    2. The percentage of half days missed through authorised absence=5.13%
    3. The percentage of half days missed through unauthorised absence was=0.57%

The school has no evidence to suggest that any absence can be attributed to truancy.

    Charges for school activities

The Governors have adopted the LEA's policy as their own, the full details of which are available in school.
Briefly the policy is a non-charging policy, but we do invite voluntary contributions towards the costs of class visits, performers in school etc. during term Ume. If the activity cannot be funded without contributions, this will be made clear to parents by letter in advance. No children are excluded from such activities for non-payment.

    Complaints Procedure

The LEA has established a complaint procedure for dealing with complaints concerning school curriculum and related matters. The areas covered by the complaints procedure include matters relating to the National Curriculum; the provision of Religious Education and worship; charging policies in relation to the National Curriculum; and the temporary withdrawal of pupils from part or all of the National Curriculum.
Where a parent has a complaint, covered by the complaint procedure, the matter should be discussed informally with the Head Teacher. If the matter is not resolved the parent should make formal complaint to the LEA. The school keeps a copy of the LEA's complaint procedure for inspection by parents.
