Children
with Special Education Needs
The
Special
Needs is a broad term encompassing children who have statements
of Special Educational Needs issued by the Authority and an
additional 18% of children who will either experience some
difficulty in their work or behaviour during their school
career.
The
school has a Special Educational Needs Policy which parents
and visitors are welcome to read. It is available in the main
foyer area along with other school policies.
Children
with statements
Central Street School has a long tradition of fully supporting
children who have statements, whether because of physical,
learning or emotional difficulties. We have a building designed
for full access, but feel that the welcome we give to all
children is more to do with staff attitudes which are committed
to integration, than the school construction. We have taken
part in a partial integration scheme for more severely disabled
children and believe that the benefits of this accrue to all
children in the school.
Children
with difficulties
If a parent or a child's teacher feels that a child is experiencing
difficulty with some aspects of school life, recent legislation
reinforces our existing practice of discussing the matter
with parents. Then, depending on how severe the difficulty
is, placing the child at one of 5 stages on the school Special
Needs Register. This means some special attention for the
child and the monitoring of their progress at a termly meeting
to which parents are invited. We may feel that the involvement
of any one of the following would be helpful: speech therapy,
school nurse, vision or hearing specialists, educational psychologist
or learning support service. This procedure is designed purely
for the benefit of each child so that the school can match
its teaching to the needs of the child.
